The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), a leading trade organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., is seeking a seasoned attorney to provide contract drafting and review for a large volume of contracts. This position also provides legal support to NAHB staff, committees, councils, and task forces as needed. It also provides information to state and local associations on various issues by teaching educational programs and writing articles to assist local executive officers and members.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Review, analyze, improve, and comment on routine or standard contracts required by NAHB. Advise and educate non-legal staff on how to improve contracts required by NAHB.
Research, write and edit legal information for NAHB’s departments, committees, councils, and task forces as well as for state and local associations and their respective attorneys.
Provide legal analysis and recommendations on various legal issues affecting NAHB as directed by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel to support NAHB departments and committees.
Draft or rewrite contracts required by the Association to formalize business relationships, including, but not limited to, convention center agreements, commercial leases, and financial documents. Negotiate contracts and settlements of disputes with vendors, trademark infringers, and prospective litigants to protect the Association from legal and financial liability and negative publicity.
Address and solve problems involving novel issues affecting NAHB, its subsidiaries and affiliates, or the Federation.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated strong abilities in all aspects of contracts, as well as in non-profit association law, hospitality law, antitrust, and related legal issues.
Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with leadership within NAHB staff and membership.
Strong writing skills and the ability to speak and present complex legal information to others.
Ability to negotiate disagreements and disputes among various parties.
Ability to maintain sensitive information on a confidential basis.
Ability to balance various responsibilities, demands, and assignments from numerous stakeholders.
Requirements:
Minimum of 5 years of experience reviewing, drafting, analyzing, and negotiating varied types of contracts.
Minimum of one year of experience in association, hospitality, and/or antitrust law.
Experience with residential building industry and non-profit operations and related issues or intellectual property expertise a plus.
Law degree from an accredited law school.
Active member in good standing with the District of Columbia Bar.
