The Senior Director of Communications creates, implements, and oversees marketing and communications activities that effectively describe and promote ASCP and its products and services. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this position is integral in the daily functioning of ASCP.
Oversee MC Department Operations
Responsible for creative direction, strategy, and voice—including marketing, membership, and communications plans
Manages 2-3 direct reports
Hire, train, supervise, and monitor performance of MC team members
Provide timely and effective performance evaluations of MC team members based on performance in job functions and achievement of goals and objectives.
Establish priorities, coordinate, organize and allocate staff resources in order to accomplish organizational goals
Monitor programmatic and budgetary performance of division staff and correct deficiencies when noted.
Communicate regularly with the CEO and senior leadership regarding operational matters.
Understand the organization, its members, their place in health care and provide strategy and operation to the way pharmacists, the membership, the leadership, and the public see, hear and understand the organization and its priorities.
Oversee decision making at staff level regarding budget development and monitoring for marketing and media relations and provides input for other departments’ marketing and communications needs.
Oversee Society’s Communications and Marketing Initiatives
Marketing for ASCP meetings, events, products, and promotions
Oversees social media efforts, podcasts, and blogs
Oversees and plans some intention programs
Creates marketing and communications plans and calendars
Manages directly or through vendor relationships: goals, audiences, and messages; project schedule, scope and timeline; implementation of project components, including obtaining relevant content, developing design and print production; implementation of press releases, brochures, pamphlets, fact sheets, Web information, etc.; distribution of appropriate components and evaluations of success.
Manages e-blasts, including development of an e-blast schedule, creating, and distributing e-blasts, and ensuring compliance with CAN SPAM regulations. If necessary, provides training and support for staff for use of templates, list management and HTML issues.
Develops new relationships and partnership opportunities for ASCP leadership and staff.
Researches and writes proposals, concept papers, and appeals to increase ASCP revenue and visibility.
Provides marketing and communications support to all departments as needed.
Writes and distributes press releases.
Cultivates working relationships with industry media to support the communications plans clearly and consistently.
Researches and identifies story opportunities and writes (or manages appropriate internal/external sources to develop) information to share with media.
Provides content for ASCP Update e-newsletter and reviews final draft before distribution.
In collaboration with other ASCP Marketing staff, oversees ASCP’s branding components to ensure consistency throughout all sub-brands and collateral, including all print, electronic and other miscellaneous marketing collateral (such as exhibit booths, give-a-way promotional items, conference signage).

This position is a hybrid position working in the Alexandria, VA office 2-3 days per week. Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter with salary requirements.
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, or Journalism or a related field and five or more years of working experience in communications to health care and associations, with a breadth of knowledge in editing and publishing, marketing, public relations, and management.
Language Skills: Excellent command of English language, superior writing and editing skills, excellent comprehension skills, and extensive proofreading and editing skills.
Communication Skills: Superior writing skills, public speaking and presentation skills, ability to present information effectively to colleagues, members/subscribers, vendors, and general public. Able to explain idea and vision for printed collateral material in concept stage.
Organization Skills: Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, work on a variety of tasks simultaneously, set and meet deadlines, maintain accuracy, and work well with people. Must demonstrate ability to manage projects and hit deadlines in fast-paced environment while staying within a budget.
Other Skills and Abilities: Familiarity with a variety of computer software programs for word processing and desktop publishing, graphics, presentation, financial management, and electronic communications.
