The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is seeking a Director of Membership. In alignment with SWANA’s five-year Strategic Plan, the Director of Membership is responsible for:
Establishing strategies that lead SWANA customer/member journeys from awareness to association champion.
Establishing and overseeing implementation of strategies to engage and serve SWANA’s chapters, technical divisions, and Young Professionals Initiative
Managing membership and technical divisions staff members
Membership
Develop and manage targeted persona awareness campaign strategies
Develop strategies to manage and maintain a robust prospective member pipeline
Develop and manage member onboarding strategies to create increased member awareness and engagement
Develop and manage member engagement strategies leading to increased member retention through enhanced member experiences
Evaluate member engagement and retention strategies to reveal key member influencers
Develop and manage membership and component operations to encourage and leverage key member influencers to enhance the member experience
Pinpoint current and future member needs. Collaborate with all SWANA departments and member leader groups to identify options to meet needs. As necessary, recommend approaches to refine, revise and/or sunset current SWANA products and services and develop new products and services
Identify opportunities to collaborate with other organizations to enhance the availability of products or services to members and to further the goals and objectives of the five-year strategic plan.
Serve as a Liaison to the Planning & Membership Committee of the SWANA Board of Directors.
Component Management
SWANA Chapters:
Work with the Senior Membership Manager to:
Develop and implement chapter relation strategies
Consult with chapter leaders to identify opportunities to improve the customer/member journey
Pinpoint current and future chapter and chapter leader needs to better serve their individual constituents and develop strategies to grow chapter capabilities and capacity.
Collaborate with SWANA departments to identify and implement programs to meet chapter needs and/or to sunset programs that are no longer meeting those needs.
Young Professionals Initiative:
Work with the Membership Team to:
Develop and implement strategies to engage and retain SWANA’s Young Professional members
Consult with the Young Professional Steering Committee, young professional members and their employers to identify strategies and tactics to improve the customer/member journey.
Pinpoint current and future young professional needs.
Collaborate with SWANA departments to identify and implement programs to meet Young Professional needs and/or to sunset programs that are no longer meeting those needs.
Technical Divisions (Special Insterest Groups):
Work with the Technical Divisions Manager to:
Develop and implement technical division strategies
Consult with technical division leaders and members to improve the customer/member journey
Pinpoint current and future technical division and TD leader needs to better serve their individual constituents and develop strategies to grow division membership and engagement
Collaborate with SWANA departments to identify and implement programs to meet technical division needs and/or to sunset programs that are no longer meeting those needs
Administrative:
Use Association data and software resources and personal expertise to track and evaluate member and technical division data that will inform regular reports to senior leadership team and other stakeholders
Identify needs and potential modifications to the Association’s software capabilities (e.g., iMIS, the Association Management System; Acumen Association Analytics) in conjunction with SWANA’s Database Administrator, IT Director, staff members, and consultants.
Supervise, support, and coach the Membership and Technical Divisions staff including conducting regular performance evaluations
Manage vendor relationships
Develop and/or supervise the development and implementation of fiscal year budgets for the Membership, Chapters, Young Professionals and Technical Divisions cost centers and provide pricing scenarios in support of other departments/programs as required
Attend meetings of the SWANA Board of Directors, Advisory Board, Chapters, Technical Divisions, and standing committees as required
Other duties as assigned
Remote-only candidates will be considered for this position. Currently SWANA allows staff to work in our Silver Spring office or from home.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor’s Degree
Seven (7) years, or more, of progressive management experience
At least three (3) years experience working for a professional or trade association
Proven ability to perform as a self-starter, take initiative and work independently
Strong analytical skills
Ability to gather and analyze information from various sources to find growth opportunities
Extensive knowledge of database management systems
Demonstrated ability to develop and execute new programs and initiatives
Excellent communication skills
Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite
Must be available and willing to travel as needed. (less than 25%)
Desired Qualifications and Capabilities:
Extensive knowledge of iMIS or other association membership database management systems
Demonstrated ability to develop and execute new membership programs and initiatives.
Ability to gather and analyze information from various sources to find membership growth opportunities
Prior experience working with the solid waste industry is not required, but is helpful
