What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
Today, we are an alliance of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and a national office who work in communities across the United States to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI advocates for all who are affected by mental illness, both the individuals and the people in their lives. In particular, we work to address disparities and injustices and to promote dignity and inclusion for all people with mental illness and their families. In addition to being advocates, we educate, we listen, and we lead as evidenced by our public awareness campaigns, the range of numerous programs we provide, and our strong public policy.
We currently have an opening for a Director, Governance & Membership. The Director is responsible for implementing and overseeing an integrated Governance, Risk, and Standards (GRS) strategy and process, including socializing GRS across NAMI and the Alliance to promote awareness, as well as to monitor and evaluate application of GRS principles. The Director will work with cross-functional teams to share pertinent information relating to GRS issues that may impact decision-making. In addition, the Director will carry out responsibilities such as: recommending policy changes, establishing priorities, developing and implementing long range plans and evaluating and modifying ongoing governance functions and tasks. Finally, the Director will manage, curate and update all related tools and resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops strategy, content and resources to help NAMI state and affiliate organizations with member retention and recruitment, and for governance function.
Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for any sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.
Establishes service quality goals for the governance and membership team and implements strategies to meet these goals.
Oversees the responsibilities of all team members and completes performance assessment and team and individual development.
Coordinates all aspects of membership services for the governance and membership team.
Plans and directs policies and objectives for addressing member inquiries.
Supports Governance & Membership management of relationship with the NAMI Board of Directors, particularly as it relates to the fulfillment of their governance responsibilities.
Creates and oversees standard operating procedures for processing memberships within NAMI360.
Manage the membership application approval process.
Publish monthly and annual reports on membership status.
Develops strategy, content and resources to help NAMI state and affiliate organizations with member retention and recruitment.
Develop and manage processes for regularly identifying member needs.
Develop and manage process for member feedback on programs and services.
Ensures the enrollment process is complete and records Membership profile information.
Work with Marketing Department to develop programs and social media campaigns to recruit members.
Promote alignment of the Governance Risk and Standards (GRS) strategy with NAMI and Field Advancement operational goals, Standards of Excellence, Charter and Affiliate Agreements;
Management of core affiliation and charter documents via a technology platform, i.e., Salesforce;
Create communications to the field as regular reminders and updates about evergreening documentation;
Implement training modules for field users on the use and access of the BOX;
Develop and manage a document tracking system for audit purposes;
Conduct evergreening document audit and review on an on-going basis and a full audit at least annually;
Maintain policies and standards and annually review them to propose, write and disseminate additional guidelines;
Review and audit bylaw amendments for compliance with NAMI governing documents for the Alliance, i.e., Standards of Excellence
COORDINATION OF LEGAL AGREEMENTS
Develop and manage a communications and tracking system for legal documents, including Charters and Affiliate Agreements for recording when received back fully executed;
Execute amendments to legal documents related to name changes, geographic service areas, and/or mergers;
Review policies and amendments within the Standards of Excellence document, Charter and Affiliate Agreements every five years to propose, write and disseminate additional guidelines;
Manage and execute affiliate processes, including but not limited to: new affiliate start-up, closures, mergers, etc.

Fulfill all other duties as requested/assigned;
GOVERNANCE DISPUTE RESOLUTIONS
Lead the Risk Management process for issues that have the potential or escalates to the board governance committee.
Foster accurate and timely communication of risks, issues, and opportunities that affect/could adversely affect NAMI, the Alliance and its mission;
Collaborate with National Director, FA and cross-functional teams to evaluate and determine possible resolution and/or process to de-escalate and/or resolve the conflict and prevent escalate to dispute resolution process
Collaborate with NAMI Board to implement dispute resolution process as outlined in NAMI Board of Director’s Operating Policies and Procedures, and any required action, when applicable;
Develop, implement, monitor, and maintain a risk management tracking form for reporting out
Bachelor’s degree in a related field; master’s degree preferred.
8 – 10 years’ experience in leadership roles with non-profit organizations. Past experience in a federated network is highly desired.
Skilled in analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating learning for a variety of instructional formats.
Previous project management experience and use of Salesforce (preferred).
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and can be detail oriented while holding the larger strategy.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
