The American Chemistry Council (ACC), a national trade association representing the world’s leading chemical and plastics manufacturers, currently has an opportunity for a Senior Director, Plastics Outreach and Public Affairs for its Plastics division. ACC represents its members on public policy issues; coordinates the industry’s research and testing programs; and administers Responsible Care®, the industry’s environment, health, safety and security performance improvement initiative.
The position is responsible for managing and directing the day-to-day execution and long-term fulfillment of the Division’s national strategic outreach and repositioning initiative. This position regularly interfaces with the Division’s communications/public affairs vendor, Division consultants and the Outreach Oversight and Management Team. The position provides both direction and execution of advocacy support, writing, research, media relations, and content development, and reports directly to the Senior Director, Sustainability and Public Outreach.
Other key duties and responsibilities of the position include supporting the development and execution of the Division’s national repositioning initiative, including the management of a broad portfolio of communications plans and tactics to deliver on the Division’s short- and long-term goals and strategies; guiding the collection, development and distribution of content to reposition conversations about plastics, improve consumer favorability, and support state-based and federal advocacy; writes and reviews content for paid, earned, social, visual and digital media outreach; and supports alignment of tactical plans with attainment of and reporting on key performance indicators.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field and at least 10 years’ experience in communications, public policy, issue advocacy, media relations or relevant field. Strong written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to write creatively and communicate technical information, experience with nonprofit or association management as well as experience with a full range of paid, earned social, visual and digital media tools and engaging with online stakeholders (bloggers, influencers, etc.) are a must.
