As ADEA’s Senior Vice President of Policy and Educational Research (SVP of PER), you will have the satisfaction of contributing your deep knowledge of higher education data collection and experience using data analyses to develop data stories that will serve as catalysts for business decisions to help academic dentistry to continue to thrive. Your leadership in the ADEA Office of Policy and Educational Research will help ADEA achieve the vision of a well-prepared and diverse oral health workforce that is improving the health of all individuals and communities.
You will report to and collaborate daily with the Chief Policy Officer to develop a policy and research agenda that addresses challenging issues facing dental education, including relevant higher education topics, and supports the ADEA Strategic Framework. You will lead and support the Policy and Educational Research (PER) staff of three as they work to make advances on key policy and research priorities to meet the objectives of the Association and of ADEA.
In this role, you will bring an unwavering commitment to meet project milestones on time, on budget and with a high level of internal and external customer satisfaction. You will bring your customary innovative and action-oriented approach to formulating the “story” by synthesizing analysis findings, implications and recommendations to develop a roadmap towards achieving the Association and its members’ goals. You take pride in your ability to relate well to others and bring solutions while remaining result-oriented, proactive, focused and enthusiastic about what you do.
Your focus within this unit will be on data collection, quantitative analysis and using data to inform decision making at dental schools and programs and to support internal units in data collection and analysis to inform business decisions. The analyses your team will produce will be largely descriptive statistics, trends, and correlations. Psychometric tests, hypothesis-based research, and marketing research are not the primary work of this unit.
You will be comfortable being a role model to others and will bring leadership skills that include managerial effectiveness, strategic agility, and innovation management. In this position, you will supervise Senior Director of Educational Research and the Senior Director of Policy Research directly and the Research Analyst indirectly.
You will conduct ADEA’s ongoing policy and educational research activities and expand the visibility and application of these resources in member institutions. These current ongoing activities include:
Surveys and data collections:
ADEA Survey of Dental School Seniors (focuses on U.S. dental school graduates) and ADEA Survey of Canadian Dental Schools (focuses on Canadian dental school graduates) (both annual). These surveys gather information about preparedness for practice, well-being, debt, plans after graduation, etc. as self- reported by graduating dental students.
ADEA Survey of Dental School Faculty (bi-annual). These faculty data are submitted by dental schools including FTE, Discipline, Rank, Salary, other income, etc., and support publications on faculty salary and vacancies at U.S. dental schools.
ADEA Survey of Allied Dental Program Directors (bi-annual). A survey and data collection sent to program directors of hygiene, assisting, and laboratory technology regarding faculty, students, and other program characteristics.
ADEA Applicants and Enrollees reporting (annual). Data from ADEA application services for application to dental schools.
Additional surveys to meet future needs

Ad hoc surveys and analyses for specific business services internally and upon member request.
Presentations at ADEA-sponsored programs and national events of other associations and groups.
Expectations for the future include:
Creating a modernized approach to information dissemination focused on providing relevant data to inform decision making at the school and program and national level and supporting other ADEA units in data collection, analysis and reporting. In addition to traditional methods of information and data dissemination such as published manuscripts, policy briefs and white papers, innovations should include employing methods to engage members in institutional and national information and data for tracking, benchmarking and decision making – such as dashboards and interactive data access; utilizing new formats to tell the data story such as infographics, data stories and visualizations.
Demonstrating the ability to deliver in-depth analyses and enable the visualization of those analytics through the refinement of existing products or development of new reports and “dashboards” that provide data to support and engage ADEA’s member institutions.

Convene and lead assigned Association committees such as the ADEA Policy and Research Advisory Committee.
Serve as ADEA staff liaison to external committees such as the Joint Advisory Committee on Dental Education Information (with the American Dental Association (ADA)) and others as assigned.

Identify, negotiate with, and monitor performance of external vendors critical to PER and ADEA data operations.
Ensure that new technology and data applications, software and systems in PER are compatible with Association operations, scalable to future needs, and not redundant.
