The American Society for Microbiology is looking for a dynamic Advocacy Communications Coordinator in the Marketing and Communications department. This individual will help develop clear, concise and effective advocacy communication strategies and subsequent communications outreach regarding ASM’s advocacy positions to ASM members, the public and our key stakeholders. This role requires a strong communicator with experience in persuasive writing, media relations and/or advocacy communications who can leverage multiple communications platforms to activate and engage ASM members and outside audiences. The incumbent also needs global public health knowledge in order to tie our advocacy messages to ASM’s global public health programs.
Plan and implement advocacy communication initiatives/campaigns to increase support for research and innovation in the microbial sciences sector among policymakers, regulators, media and the public
Craft and edit communications content such as opinion-editorials, public statements, fact sheets, talking points, presentations, web and social media content that highlight ASM’s policy agenda
Monitor and report out impact of tactics and use findings to inform future plans
Oversee ASM’s advocacy messaging on social media
Help create infographics around ASM’s advocacy priorities
Keep abreast of ASM’s global public health programs and find avenues to connect advocacy messaging with ASM’s global health initiatives
Strong writing, proofreading/editing skills; familiarity with AP Style.
Excellent communication skills
Experience working with senior-level scientific experts and partner organizations; ability to interact with journalists and policy opinion leaders.
Must show excellent judgment and possess the diplomacy to handle potentially controversial issues.
Strong ability to interact professionally and comfortably with individuals at all levels
Strong interpersonal skills and pleasant disposition needed to work with different management styles and personality types
Strong collaborative skills and ability to organize work across departments to achieve shared objectives.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs.
Able to meet deadlines and operate with limited supervision.
Exceptional organizational skills.
Proven skill and background in science, science communication or science policy/advocacy at the federal, state and local levels.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, SALSA or other advocacy software, web content management systems, graphic design principles and/or software preferred.
Proficiency in digital communication platforms.
Ability to travel as needed.
Education and Experience:
Four-year degree in English, journalism, communications, public relations or science-related degree
4+ years' experience in media outreach, science policy communication and executive relations
Familiarity with web posting; Kentico platform preferred
Experience with a non-profit organization, institution of higher learning or other scientifically-focused organization, preferred
